Blundells Cottage In Canberra

The Best Of Canberra: Blundell’s Cottage

Canberra, the capital of Australia, is a city rich in history and culture, offering visitors a diverse range of activities to engage in. Canberra Guided Tours knows the ins and outs of the city and its hidden gems. In this blog post, we will take you on a journey to Blundell’s Cottage, one of Canberra’s historical treasures preserved in time, and we join Neil in exploring its unique story.

Blundell’s Cottage is located near Lake Burley Griffin, in the heart of Canberra. The area adjacent to the cottage was once a highly fertile land that was plowed and attended to from the 1860s. The wool that was produced in this area was highly valued, making Robert Campbell, who ran the wool and produced it, a wealthy man. In 1860, Campbell built Blundell’s Cottage for his Plowman, William Ginn. Several families lived in the cottage over the years, with the last occupant being Alice Allfield, who lived there until she passed away in 1958.

History Preserved In The Heart Of Canberra

When Alice passed away, the cottage was slated for demolition since it was located in the middle of the city. Fortunately, it was preserved and is now a vital part of the park that runs along the northern edge of Lake Burley Griffin. It serves as a representation of how people lived in cottages all over the district and pastoral Australia until 1958. The cottage was built in 1860 and has remained relatively untouched since then, giving visitors a glimpse of how people lived in the area over a century ago. Visitors can learn about the history of the cottage, the families who lived there, and the wool industry that once thrived in the area.

Where Is Blundell’s Cottage Located?

Blundell’s Cottage is a stone’s throw away from Lake Burley Griffin, making it an excellent destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The lake’s scenic views add to the cottage’s rustic charm, providing visitors with an opportunity to relax and enjoy nature.
